La distillerie Laphroaig malte encore une partie de son orge (environ 30%). Elle utilise des alambics de petite taille, 3 wash stills en forme d'oignon et 4 spirit stills de forme conique (classic pot still). Selon Iain Handerson, ancien directeur de la distillerie, c'est au cours de la première distillation que se forge le caractère du futur whisky. Le single malt Laphroaig possède une personnalité exubérante. Sur fond de tourbe grasse et de notes fruitées (fruits exotiques et fruits rouges), il dévoile selon les versions une palette aromatique allant de la grenadine à la réglisse et de l'iode au poisson fumé.
